Attention speed cameras: On 21 April 2023, speed cameras will be deployed throughout Germany as part of the speed camera marathon. Across the EU, there is Speedweek (17 to 23 April).
Monitoring speed limits in road traffic is one of the daily tasks of the police. But once a year, the control bodies try to sensitise motorists to observe the speed limit with a coordinated campaign. The so-called speed camera marathon is organised by the European police network ROADPOL (European Roads Policing Network) and is therefore officially and internationally also called “Speed Marathon”.
It is thus embedded in the European Speedweek, which runs from 17 to 23 April 2023. EU-wide, however, a second week of intensified traffic monitoring is planned from 7 to 13 August 2023 – right in the middle of the peak travel season in Europe.
In Germany, the 2023 Speed Camera Marathon will take place on 21 April. The German authorities involved in the speed camera marathon usually announce the planned speed camera locations a few days before the speed camera marathon.
North Rhine-Westphalia, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony want to use the entire Speedweek for increased checks, Bavaria is limiting itself to 21 April. Berlin relies on continuous traffic monitoring and therefore does not participate in the speed camera marathon. Brandenburg is participating in the speed camera marathon, but does not want to publish the measuring points in advance. Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Rhineland-Palatinate will also increase their speed checks on 21 April. The other federal states have not yet announced their participation.
